Cell service was fine throughout the campground, but WiFi is only available in the camp store area. We made our reservations over the phone, and the customer service was helpful and friendly. We spent a lot of time decompressing there after days of site seeing, and it was a just a lovely spot. It was a gas fire pit, so we could simply turn it on whenever we pleased and warm up in the chilly late afternoons and evenings. And our very favorite amenity might have been the beautiful community fire pit. Our family had just come from roughing it in Custer State Park, so we particularly enjoyed the heated pool and hot tub. Lower Ranch Camp was quite a bit away from the highway and had nice access to amenities, but the sites seemed less spacious and a bit unlevel in certain spots. If you have bikes, or you don’t care about the pool and hot tub, The Island and Ranch Camp are so beautiful and peaceful. So again, you’re going to have to think about your personal camping preferences when booking at Rafter J.

Note that satellite TV is available in this section only. I’m glad we didn’t stay in that area, though, since it has the least wooded and scenic feel of all the camps.

If you have a big rig and love pull thrus and full hook ups, Main Camp might be your jam. We were a bit concerned about this when we arrived, but road noise did not bother us at all. The downside to these four camps is that they are the closest to the highway.

Other ‘camps’ that are within close walking distance of these amenities include Main Camp, Base Camp, and Cabin Camp. Since we were not traveling with our bikes, we wanted to be close to the pool, playground, and camp store area. We chose to stay in Line Camp (on site 263) based on advice from our intrepid campground reporter, Kerri Cox. There is quite a range of amenities and scenery for each camp, and the best campsite will range dramatically for different visitors. There are 30 and 50 amp sites.Since Rafter J is set up with these distinct ‘camp’ areas, it’s pretty important to consider which area will work best for your family. The boys made a video tour of the campground, if you would like to see it.Ĭell Phone Reception: AT&T, Verizon, T-MobileĪmenities: picnic table, fire pit/grill, playground, volleyball and basketballįull Hook-ups: Yes. When we drive around and see other campgrounds where they are packed in like sardines, I am so grateful we found this site. If we would ever come back to this area again, I would definitely stay here! Everything was well maintained and we didn’t feel crowded.

I felt very happy with our campground selection. The camp store had souvenirs, beer, ice, basic camping and first aid supplies, and ice cream sandwiches! There is also a small parking area just for pool parking, if you are in a further away camp spot and want to drive up. The pool was a nice size and there were tables with umbrellas. I think each load of our laundry used about 2 quarters to dry (on medium heat). The driers (there were 2) were much larger and cost $0.25 initially. The laundry room closest to our camp site had 3 washers (although one was broken), which costs $3.00 to do a load of laundry. Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Memorial are 20-30 minutes away. There is the small town of Hill City about 10-15 minutes drive and a Walmart about 30-40 minutes away. It is a bit of a drive to get to other places. It backs into The Black Hills National Forrest for hiking activities. They do (as of our booking) take a discount for Good Sam members. The beginning drive is paved and has street lights lining it. It is really well spaced out so you don’t feel cramped in. RV spots are pull through or back in and are on gravel spaces. It is a beautiful campground and seems well maintained. Unfortunately, when we went to reserve a spot for the pancakes, we were told they were not doing them this year due to Covid-19. There is swimming pool, bathhouses (open!), laundry facilities (washer and dryer by quarters), a small store, and a pancake breakfast (for a fee, Monday-Thursday, Memorial Day to Labor Day). They offer full hookups, RV and tent camping, and cabin rentals. For our week in South Dakota (for Mount Rushmore), we stayed at the Rafter J Bar Ranch.
